Oparty na książce “The Chibok Girls” napisanej przez Helona Habilę, film odtwarza podróż Helona do Chibok, aby odwiedzić tych, którzy pozostali po szokującym porwaniu 276 dziewcząt ze szkoły Chibok Girls w 2014 r. Ten eksperymentalny utwór w złożony sposób analizuje kontekst historyczny, w którym miało miejsce to przerażające wydarzenie, i zaprasza zarówno uczestników filmu, jak i publiczność do uczestnictwa, sprawdzania swojej empatii i medytacji nad jednym z największych wyzwań stojących dziś przed Nigerią.
BIOGRAM REŻYSERKI:
Branwen Okpako – urodziła się w Lagos w Nigerii. W 1991 r. ukończyła licencjat z nauk politycznych na Uniwersytecie w Bristolu, a w 1999 r. otrzymała tytuł magistra w dziedzinie reżyserii filmowej na Niemieckiej Akademii Filmu i Telewizji w Berlinie. Nagradzana reżyserka, która ma w swym portolio takie filmy jak “Landing” (1995), “LoveLoveLiebe” (1999), “Dirt for Dinner” (2000), “Valley of the Innocent” (2003), “The Education of Auma Obama” (2011), “The Curse of Medea” (2014) i “Powrót do Chibok” (2003). DESCRIPTION:
Based on the book ‘The Chibok Girls’ written by Helon Habila, ‘Return to Chibok’ re-enacts Helon’s journey to Chibok to visit those left behind after the shocking kidnapping of 276 girls from Chibok Girls school in 2014.
With complexity, this experimental piece interrogates the historical context in which this horrific event took place and invites both the films participants and the audience to listen, feel, empathize and meditate on one of the greatest challenges facing Nigeria today.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Branwen Okpako – born in Lagos, Nigeria. She graduated with a BA in Political Science from the University of Bristol in 1991 and received her MA in Film Directing from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin in 1999. An award-winning director, her portfolio includes films such as ‘Landing’ (1995), ‘LoveLoveLiebe’ (1999), ‘Dirt for Dinner’ (2000), ‘Valley of the Innocent’ (2003), ‘The Education of Auma Obama’ (2011), ‘The Curse of Medea’ (2014) and ‘Return to Chibok’ (2003). Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Digital Media at the University of California, Davies.
