DESCRIPTION:
Milisuthando Bongela takes us on a journey to her grandmother’s home in South Africa, where her roots lie and her memories and family connections are the strongest. She sifts through a wealth of archive material and recalls the apartheid era in the Transkei Bantustan and the process of independence. From there she ventures back to her childhood and recalls moving with her family to London in the 1990s. She collects stories and testimonies from relatives and friends, raising questions about her identity. This highly insightful and poetic documentary is not only a portrait of the director herself, but also a reverie on issues of domination, fear and love in the context of a category such as race.
DIRECTOR’S BIO:
Milisuthando Bongela – an award-winning writer, editor, cultural worker and artist. She started her career in the fashion industry, but later moved into the world of music, art, media and film, turning her attention towards Indigenousness. Art editor of the Mail & Guardian’s Friday section, she co-produced and co-hosted, with Athambiene Masola, the podcast ‘Umoya: On African Spirituality’.
