The wealth and privilege of whites in South Africa was built on the suffering and death of people working in gold mines. Today, across South Africa, communities associated with the industries that produce such immense wealth can only boast the extreme underdevelopment of the areas in which they live and the world’s largest epidemic of tuberculosis and silicosis. Through the testimonies of many mining families from across South Africa and the use of archival material, we learn how this happened and the true cost of South African gold.

Catherine Meyburgh – reżyserka, montażystka i producentka filmów dokumentalnych, fabularnych i telewizyjnych. Odpowiadała za montaż ponad 30 dokumentów (m.in. “Path to Freedom”, “Nelson Mandela, the myth and me”, “Bettie”, “Kentridge & Dumas”) wyświetlanych na Arte, Channel 4, BBC – Storyville, NBC oraz na wielu festiwalach filmowych. Jej videoinstalacje i multiprojekcje z zakresu designu były prezentowane m.in. w Mediolanie, Nowym Yorku, Met opera czy La Scali.
Richard Pakleppa – scenarzysta, reżyser i producent z RPA, który swoje filmy realizuje od 1990 r. Zanim został filmowcem, studiował psychologię i filozofię oraz pracował z młodzieżą jako aktywista w prowincji Przylądkowej Zachodniej. Jego dokumenty (m.in. “Ser Humano”, “A Strong Heart”, “Ndamona – I Have Seen”, “Kuluba”) i filmy fabularne (“Taste of Rain”, “3 ½ Lives of Philip Wetu”) były pokazywane na wielu międzynarodowych festiwalach filmowych oraz na licznych kanałach telewizyjnych. Jest współzałożycielem i dyrektorem firmy “On Land Production”.
Catherine Meyburgh – director, editor and producer of documentaries, feature films and television. She has been responsible for the editing of more than 30 documentaries (including Path to Freedom, Nelson Mandela, the Myth and Me, Bettie, Kentridge & Dumas) screened on Arte, Channel 4, BBC – Storyville, NBC and many film festivals. Her video installations and multi-projections in the field of design have been presented in Milan, New York, the MET opera and La Scala, among others.
Richard Pakleppa is a South African writer, director and producer who has been making his films since 1990. Before becoming a filmmaker, he studied psychology and philosophy and worked with youth as an activist in the Western Cape province. His documentaries (including 'Ser Humano’, 'A Strong Heart’, 'Ndamona – I Have Seen’, 'Kuluba’) and feature films (’Taste of Rain’, '3 ½ Lives of Philip Wetu’) have been screened at many international film festivals and on numerous television channels. He is co-founder and director of the company „On Land Production”.
