Young filmmaker Jay returns to his home district in Washington, D.C., where he tries to find old friends. But nothing is the same anymore. The neighborhood he grew up in has changed beyond recognition, and the old residents have been replaced by well-to-do whites. Unable to cope with his memories, the disappearance of someone close to him, and his membership in this new community, he has to face alienation, isolation, and also find his own identity.

Merawi Gerima is a director, producer, writer and editor from Washington DC. Son of legendary Ethiopian director Haile Gerima. Creator of the short films „Fire under the leaves” (2014), „Lifeline” (2015), „Riot” (2015) and „Heart” (2016). „The Leftovers” is his feature-length debut.
