An inspiring portrait of the legendary singer Cesária Évora, born in colonial Cape Verde, who rose to the heights of the musical world and always, above all else, pursued freedom. Ana Sofia Fonseca uses a number of techniques in her documentary to gradually unleash the spirit of Évora’s songs, as well as to show the feminist strength and pioneering spirit of the African music icon. The director conducted a plethora of interviews and years of exhaustive research, allowing her to source and use unique archival material in the film, most of which is personal footage shot by the singer’s relatives. The documentary is also full of political themes and social contexts from the barefoot diva’s life. And there are also beautiful nature shots of contemporary Cape Verde, showing the poetic nature of the sea, land and air that shaped this extraordinary woman and artist.
